Your Majesty,
Shetland and Orkney
Thank you for your reply to my letter of 13th November via your Senior Correspondence Officer, Mrs. Sonia Bonici.
I note that my letter has been passed to the Right Honourable Lord Falconer for his consideration.
I would respectfully remind your Majesty of the words of the 1669 Act of Annexation: “It is not only fit in order to his majesty’s interests, but will be the great advantage of his Majesty’s subjects dwelling there, that without interposing any other Lord or superior betwixt his Majesty and them, they should have an immediate dependence upon his Majesty and his Officers”. The Act clearly states that the Islands were being taken back under the direct dependence of the Crown, even to the exclusion of Parliament.
The passage which includes the words: “And farther it is Declared that if any general act of Dissolution of his Majesty’s property shall be made at any time hereafter; the said Lordship and Earldom ………… shall not be understood to fall under the same”  would exclude the Islands from the Act of Union in 1707.
As far as I am aware, no action has been taken to remove the Islands from direct dependence on the Crown and your loyal subjects here call on your Majesty for the proper resumption of a relationship similar to that of your Majesty with the Isle of Man.
Because of the wording of the Act and in the light of events prior to it, we do not believe this is a matter for Parliament, but respectfully submit that it should be directly between your Majesty and your loyal subjects in the Islands.
I remain,
Yours faithfully,

Stuart Hill, Chairman of Shetland and Orkney Udal Law Association.
