The police took the vehicle away after it was comprehensively vandalised. They were aware of and understood the notice on the windscreen, which included the following: No consent is given for any clamping, towing, confiscation or impounding. The owner reserves the right to charge £1,000 plus expenses for any infringement of this notice. By carrying out any of the above actions you enter into a contract agreeing to these terms. I made it clear to your officers that I did not give my consent to the removal and by your officers giving instructions to do so, you knowingly and voluntarily entered into the above contract. The enclosed invoice is therefore due for immediate payment. Your cheque by return will be appreciated. Yours faithfully, Stuart Hill.  Meanwhile I was advised verbally (as far as I remember) that the police intended to refer the matter of having no tax to the DVLA (licensing authority). The matter of no MOT was not being pursued because I was not driving the vehicle and, although it obviously had been driven, there was no corroboration - so they were taking no further action. I wrote, asking for confirmation and admitted to driving the vehicle. |
